Measuring Your Custom Driveshaft

This guide will help you gather the necessary details to order your custom-built driveshaft. You'll need to provide your transmission model, rear U-joint series, and pinion yoke measurements.

Important Measurement Note: Please measure to the FRONT face of the pinion yoke and do NOT subtract 1/4″. Reference Diagram N for the “X” measurement — this is exactly what we require. For complete measuring instructions, continue reading, and feel free to reach out if you need assistance.

Step 1 — Determine Your Transmission

First, identify your specific transmission model. Spline count and seal diameter typically determine the required slip yoke.

Important note for TH400, 4L80, 4L85 and 6L80: We need to know if your 32-spline output shaft has a threaded hole in the center. Transmission slip yokes come with different U-Joint series — matching horsepower and torque to the correct U-Joint series is essential. For aftermarket transmissions, spline count and seal diameter typically determine the required slip yoke.

Step 2 — Determine Your Rear Universal Joint

Identify your rear U-Joint by measuring the “Cup Diameter” and overall length. We highly recommend digital calipers — a difference of just 1/16″ can require a different joint. Hundreds of sizes exist; these four common series cover most requirements.

1310 Spicer Series

  • 1 1/16″ Cup Diameter (Diagram A — C)
  • 3 7/32″ Length (Diagram A — B)
  • Some Ford applications use 1 1/8″ cups
  • Up to 500 HP — circle track, road racing, small-tire drag racing, and 4×4
  • Performance Dynamic Cryo Joint available

1330 Spicer Series

  • 1 1/16″ Cup Diameter (Diagram A — C)
  • 3 5/8″ Length (Diagram A — B)
  • Some Ford applications use 1 1/8″ cups
  • Stronger than 1310 — common in 5.0 Mustangs
  • Performance Dynamic Cryo Joint available

3R Saginaw Series

  • 1 1/8″ Cup Diameter (Diagram A — C)
  • 2 5/8″ Length, internal clip retention (Diagram A — B)
  • Most popular GM joint — handles up to 700 HP in road/circle-track racing
  • Solid drag-racing version for sportsman classes
  • Performance Dynamic Cryo Joint available

1350 Spicer Series

  • 1 3/16″ Cup Diameter (Diagram A — C)
  • 3 5/8″ Length (Diagram A — B)
  • Built to OEM standards with cryogenic treatment for maximum strength
  • For drag racing: solid non-greaseable design recommended for high shock loads
